Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, and Emma D’Arcy have joined the cast of the Game of Thrones spin-off series House of the Dragon.

The trio of British actors were unveiled in a tweet from the official Game Of Thrones Twitter account on Friday.

Former Doctor Who Smith is set to appear as Prince Daemon Targargeyn, the younger brother of King Viserys Targaryen, who will be played by Paddy Considine.

Prince Daemon is described as being a “peerless warrior” who”possesses the true blood of the dragon”.

The role will see Smith portraying a different kind of royalty following his turn as Prince Phillip in The Crown.

D’Arcy has been cast as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, who is “the king’s first-born child”.

The character description reads: “She is of pure Valyrian blood, and she is a dragonrider. Many would say that Rhaenyra was born with everything… but she was not born a man.”

Cooke will play Alicent Hightower, the Hand of the King’s daughter, who “possesses both a courtly grace and a keen political acumen” and is “the most comely woman in the Seven Kingdoms”.

House of the Dragon follows the Targaryen dynasty, a family descended from dragons that played a pivotal role in Game of Thrones.

The HBO show is based on George R.R Martin’s Fire and Blood prequel series and is set 300 years before the events of the original series.

It is scheduled to air in 2022.
