A serving Metropolitan Police officer accused of raping a woman at a luxury hotel in central London has been remanded in custody.

PC Adam Zaman, 28, is accused of carrying out the sex attack at the Andaz London hotel by Hyatt in Liverpool Street on October 24.

The officer, who is based in the force’s East Area Command Unit, appeared at Westminster magistrates court on Wednesday afternoon to face the charge for the first time.

“The defendant is a serving police officer in the Metropolitan Police force,” said prosecutor Jonathan Bryan.

“We say while they were staying at the hotel together, he raped her.”

The court heard Zaman “strenuously denies” the rape allegation and intends to fight the charge at trial. He was off-duty at the time of the incident.

District Judge Michael Snow remanded the police officer into custody at a hearing on Wednesday afternoon until a plea hearing on November 24.

Zaman has been suspended by the Met and the force’s Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed of the criminal case.

The matter has also been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

Detective Chief Superintendent Paul Trevers, Policing Commander for the East Area Command Unit, said: “I recognise that the public will be concerned to hear that a serving police officer has been charged with such a serious offence. We absolutely share that concern.

“We acted swiftly when this allegation was reported to us and have fully supported what continues to be a thorough investigation by detectives from the City of London Police. Specialist support is being provided to the complainant.

“PC Zaman has now been charged and it is important that criminal proceedings are allowed to take their course. Nothing should be said or reported which could put the integrity of those proceedings at risk."

Zaman, from Romford, has not formally entered a plea to the charge of rape.
