George Michael has recorded a version of a Stevie Wonder song as a wedding gift to Prince William and Kate Middleton.

The pop star, who is not invited to the wedding but was close to Diana, Princess of Wales, has made a cover of the romantic 1972 track You And I.

It will be free to download and Michael is encouraging fans to make a donation to the royal couple's charitable fund, which will share proceeds among a number of good causes.

Revealing the chosen track on CNN's Piers Morgan Tonight, the singer said Wonder had waived the rights to the song until "way after the wedding".

Michael, who was given an eight-week prison sentence last year after crashing his Land Rover while under the influence of cannabis, said the song took two days to record, and was his way of publicly expressing his happiness at the marriage.

Michael said he had heard, via a mutual friend, that the song had the seal of approval from Buckingham Palace.

He said he was "incredibly happy" for the couple, and described Prince William's future wife as a "cracker".

He added: "I am absolutely sure Diana would have loved the whole thing. I really hope she would have loved this track. I have a feeling she would have done."

Talk show host Morgan described it as an "unbelievably romantic" song, which he had used to woo his own wife, and which US President Barack Obama used to woo his wife Michelle.

Earlier, Michael told his Twitter followers: "It's going to break your heart!"
