One in 10 millennials would call out an electrician to change a light bulb — rather than save money and do it themselves, a study claimed today.

The research into spending habits also found two fifths of millennials aged 18-34 would be happy to pay professionals to wire a plug for them.

In contrast, 98 per cent of 45 to 54-year-olds would change a bulb and 90 per cent would wire plugs themselves to save money.

Commissioned by investment firm Crowdstacker, the research appeared to show the younger age group are less concerned about their finances.

It found about a fifth of young Londoners spent up to 30 minutes a month monitoring their finances, while five per cent admitted to not bothering to check their accounts at all.

Karteek Patel, chief executive of Crowdstacker, said: “Millennials should embrace the many ways they can review and better understand their personal finances, and seek out how the digital revolution can help make their financial lives better.”

The survey quizzed 2,000 people, 540 of whom were aged 18-35.

Crowdstacker said young people could save thousands by managing money better.

Mr Patel added: “Twenty years ago there was simply less choice available … it is possible older people are a little more self-sufficient and more likely to not only undertake household tasks… but also more conscious of taking the time required to make sure they are managing their savings and investments.”
