Rishi Sunak has reflected on one year as Chancellor with a rare picture of him as a child.

Mr Sunak took to Twitter today to share a childhood snap compared to an image of him now, captioned: “How it started, how it’s going.”

The school picture shows a young Mr Sunak in a school uniform, complete with a blazer and matching cap.

In the post, he wrote: “Growing up I never thought I would be in this job (mainly because I wanted to be a Jedi).

“I’m honoured that on this day last year the PM asked me to serve as Chancellor.

He added that it’s been “incredibly tough” but thanked those that supported him along the way.

Mr Sunak was appointed Chancellor after replacing Sajid Javid in a cabinet reshuffle in February 2020.

The son of a doctor and pharmacist, Mr Sunak grew up in Southampton, Hampshire, and has experienced a meteoric rise after becoming an MP in 2015.

Mr Sunak was selected as the Conservative candidate for Richmond (in North Yorkshire) in 2014 after former party leader William Hague announced he was stepping down as MP.

The 40-year-old was elected as MP for the constituency in 2015 with a majority of 19,550 (36.2 per cent) – and was re-elected in 2017 with a majority of 23,108 (40.5 per cent) and in 2019 with an increased majority of 27,210 (47.2 per cent).

After Boris Johnson was elected Prime Minister in 2019, he appointed Mr Sunak as Chief Secretary to the Treasury and became a member of the Privy Council the next day ahead of his appointment as Chancellor the following year.

As Mr Sunak celebrates one year in the role, it’s been announced that he could possibly extend the stamp duty holiday by six weeks to prevent tens of thousands of home buyers being caught in a “completion trap”.
