MoD to name troops killed in action

12 April 2012

The Ministry of Defence is due to name the two latest British soldiers killed in Afghanistan.

Soldiers from 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment were on a routine foot patrol near their base in the Upper Gereshk Valley when they were attacked.

A third soldier was also injured and is receiving treatment. Next of kin have been informed.

The latest deaths now mean that five soldiers from 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment, based in Colchester, have died in Afghanistan this week.

The names will be announced after a 24-hour period of grace requested by the soldiers' families.

An MoD spokesman said: "It is with deep regret that the MoD must confirm that two British soldiers from 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment were killed in Afghanistan.

"They were conducting a routine foot patrol in the vicinity of their base at Forward Operating Base Gibraltar in the Upper Gereshk Valley when they came under enemy fire, tragically killing two of the patrol party.

"A third soldier was also injured in the incident. They were evacuated to Camp Bastion medical facility where the injured soldier is receiving treatment for his wounds."

The two latest deaths bring the death toll in Afghanistan to 102.

On Sunday the three soldiers also serving in 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment died in a suicide attack in southern Afghanistan. They were Private Nathan Cuthbertson, 19, Private Daniel Gamble, 22, and Private Charles Murray, 19.
