Molly: bitter battle over future

12 April 2012

A 12-year-old British girl at the centre of an abduction row looks set to remain in Pakistan while her parents square up for a bitter legal battle over her long-term future.

Molly Campbell disappeared from her home in the Western Isles of Scotland more than a week ago amid fears she had been kidnapped.

A massive investigation was launched after it emerged she had flown to Pakistan with her sister and father.

But in Lahore on Friday Molly said it was her decision to flee to Pakistan and that she was very happy and would like to stay there permanently.

Speaking with a distinct Scottish accent, she insisted her name was no longer Molly and that she wished to be addressed by her Islamic name Misbah Iram Ahmed Rana.

And she insisted there were no plans for an arranged marriage.

Her mother Louise Campbell and father Sajad Ahmed Rana, who were divorced in 2001, made it clear they are each determined to secure long-term custody of Molly.

In a statement issued by solicitors Balfour and Manson, Mrs Campbell said: "We have agreed we are not going to say anything. We are acting in the best interests of the child and we're doing all we can to secure Molly back."

Mohammed Basit, a lawyer acting on behalf of Molly's father, said: "We are preparing for a legal guardian lawsuit for her father and will proceed for interim custody and then for guardianship." The application will be filed in Pakistan.

Police investigating the circumstances surrounding her move to Pakistan said they have sent a report to prosecutors.
