Presenter Monty Don has branded the BBC “cheap” after it dropped today’s Gardeners’ World in favour of snooker.

He said cutting his BBC2 show from its 8.30pm slot to fit in the World Snooker Championships was a “crazy hiatus bound to annoy”. GW recently attracted a 2.59 million audience, the snooker has half as many viewers.

He tweeted: “Total lack of interest in programme or audience by schedulers. Bank holiday weekend is one of the busiest times for gardeners.” Viewer Roz Smith asked: “Why does snooker, cricket, sport ALWAYS take precedence?” Don said: “Because they are cheap.”

The BBC said snooker had a loyal following, and all types of show sometimes had to move due to sport.
