More freezing conditions expected

More freezing temperatures are forecast for the start of January
12 April 2012

The Arctic start to the new year is set to continue for the first half of the month with fresh snowfall, severe frosts and ice on the roads, forecasters have said.

Motorists were warned of hazardous driving conditions over the weekend as people head back home or to work after the Christmas break.

Ice will be a problem on the roads, with parts of northern England and Scotland struggling to get above freezing on Sunday.

The biting conditions, which are expected to last for the first 10 days of the month, follow the coldest December in more than a decade.

Seven people died last month as snow, avalanches and sub-zero temperatures wreaked havoc across the UK.

Forecasters said temperatures could drop as low as minus 15C in some parts of Scotland and northern England over the next 10 days.

During Saturday, snow showers will move southwards but they are expected to be light and will clear during the night.

From Tuesday until next weekend there is a chance of heavy snow showers in the North, London and eastern England.

Matt Dobson, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "The first 10 days of this month will be exceptionally cold for much of the UK.

"There will be widespread frost and parts of Scotland will see temperatures of minus 10C to minus 15C.
