More snow as wintry weather returns

Snow has returned to parts of Britain
12 April 2012

Snow returned to many parts of England and Wales as winter launched another blast at Britain.

The latest falls began in south Wales at around breakfast time and spread over large areas of central England during the morning and afternoon.

"It is coming down fairly heavily in places, with accumulations to a depth of two inches," said John Hutchinson, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association.

The falls were triggered by moist air from the Atlantic meeting cold air already over the country.

Mr Hutchinson said: "In quite a lot of areas sleet has turned to snow - it's been a wintry mix."

From south Wales the snow spread to the Bristol area and other parts of the West Country, then to the Midlands, including Rugby and Leicester. Mr Hutchinson said: "We expect more falls in some of those areas already affected plus in parts of East Anglia."

Heavy snow closed Birmingham Airport's runway. It was not expected to reopen before midnight.

A statement on the airport's website added: "There are severe delays and cancellations, and some flights have been diverted away from Birmingham."

Travellers visiting the airport by car are also warned to leave extra time for their journey due to the weather. Public transport to the airport is also affected.

The snow followed a bitterly cold night in many areas with temperatures falling to minus 16C (3F) at Braemar in Scotland, minus 5C (23F) in East Anglia and 0C (32F) in London.
