The mother of a girl who died after being attacked by dogs has revealed she wrote to Prime Minister Gordon Brown urging him to crack down on the dangerous animals.

Veronica Lynch said she wrote the letter last month following the death of four-year-old John-Paul Massey who was attacked by a dog while at a house in Liverpool.

Mrs Lynch's 11-year-old daughter Kellie died in 1989 after she was attacked by two rottweilers in Dunoon, Argyll. The case was one of those that sparked calls for the Dangerous Dogs Act in 1991.

Mrs Lynch told The Daily Record: "It's 20 years since Kellie died and very little has improved. I felt I had to write to Gordon Brown to try to change that.

"After the death in Liverpool I wrote to him asking him to take action. I've yet to hear anything back. People need to be reminded that other children have died. And if nothing is done, more will die."

Mrs Lynch, who lives in Dundee, wants rottweilers added to the banned list.

Earlier this month it was confirmed the dog that mauled John-Paul Massey to death was an illegally-held pit bull-type dog banned for being too dangerous to keep.

The case came less than three years after five-year-old Ellie Lawrenson was killed by her uncle's pit bull terrier Reuben, in St Helens, also Merseyside.

The animal involved in the attack on John-Paul Massey is classified as a section 1 dog under the Dangerous Dogs Act (1991), according to the expert who assessed it for Merseyside Police.

The Dogs Trust charity's website states that section 1 of the act stipulates that pit bull terrier owners must register their animal on a government index - failing to do so is an offence. The act also requires owners to keep their animal muzzled and on a lead in public places, and have it neutered and insured.
