Move over Hamilton  ... here comes The Stig’s 87mph tractor

This is one tractor you won’t get stuck behind — the Top Gear team added a V8 engine to the traditional rural ride and broke the record for the fastest tractor in the world in the process.

The show’s anonymous racing driver The Stig managed to push the machine to 87.2mph, beating the previous record of 80.7mph set in Finland in 2015.

The tractor was fitted with a 5.7 litre Chevy V8 engine, 4-wheel brakes, adjustable air suspension and 54-inch tyres as part of the record bid as well as a push button start ... and a spade rack.

Guinness World Records adjudicator Jack Brockbank said: “To see The Stig hurtle past me in a tractor at 87mph was surreal, but hugely impressive.

“Equally as impressive is the engineering expertise of the Top Gear team that made this possible — the combination of their skills makes for brilliant record-breaking fun.”

The record might not stand for long though, as host Matt LeBlanc will try to break it. Viewers will find out at 8pm on Sunday if he does.

He said: “As the proud owner of four tractors, you could say I’m a bit of an enthusiast.

The theme is that tractors are blocking up Britain. When you get stuck behind one, you can’t go anywhere. So we’re trying to speed up farming. When Lewis Hamilton retires, this is what he’ll be driving.”
