MPs press Blair for Iraq statement

12 April 2012

A Commons amendment to the Queen's Speech debate has attracted 107 signatures and is putting pressure on the Prime Minister to present to MPs the Government's strategy on Iraq.

The amendment is sponsored by the Scottish Nationalists and Plaid Cymru.

The signatories include 30 Labour MPs as well as a number of Tories.

It bears 44 more signatures than an amendment tabled by the Liberal Democrats, also criticising the Government's strategy in Iraq.

Angus MacNeil, SNP MP for Na h-Eileanan an Iar, said: "We very much hope that on Monday, the last day of the Queen's Speech debate, that the Speaker will accept our amendment ahead of the Liberal Democrats'.

"This will force the Prime Minister to come to the House of Commons to explain exactly what his strategy is in Iraq, rather than scurrying to a video to speak to the James Baker group in the United States.

"This is a clear victory for Parliament - and about time too," he added.
