Murdered OAP discovered by son

12 April 2012

A 77-year-old woman was found by her son murdered at her home in a rural village, police said.

The body of Georgina Edmonds was discovered at the house where she lived alone in Kiln Lane, Brambridge, near Winchester, Hants, at 5.45pm on Friday.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Barton said there were no signs of a break-in, but that she was of a generation to leave her door unlocked.

"At the moment there is no sign of forced entry. However, Mrs Edmonds was of a generation who would leave her house unlocked. It would be normal that the house was unlocked if she was at home."

Mr Barton added: "Her son lives close by and was returning home from work and went to check on his mother with a family friend and made the discovery."

She was already dead when he found her, he said.

A post-mortem showed that Mrs Edmonds died of extensive head injuries and a murder inquiry is under way with more than 50 specialist officers.

She was last seen alive on Friday and the motive is not yet known for the attack.

Forensic officers were to check whether any property is missing from the secluded house and house-to-house enquiries have been carried out.

Mr Barton said the residents of nearby Elderfield House in Kiln Lane, a hostel for ex-offenders run by Christian charity The Langley House Trust, had also been interviewed on Friday evening. "All residents at Elderfield House are accounted for," he said.
