The son of columnist Julie Burchill has taken his own life, she has revealed in a message posted on Facebook.

Burchill, 55, said her son, Jack, by second husband Cosmo Landesman, had died earlier this week and suggested not even the love of her friends could console her in her grief.

She wrote: “My beloved son Jack Landesman killed himself earlier this week. He is at peace now and in pain no longer and of course I don’t believe that life ends with death, so I am lucky. Look after the people you love, as I tried to and failed.”

Burchill, whose first son was the result of her marriage to then fellow music journalist Tony Parsons, had Jack in 1986.

When that marriage broke down — which Burchill attributed in part to her decision to embark upon a lesbian relationship with Charlotte Raven, whose brother, Daniel, became her third husband in 2004 — Jack was raised by his father. Jack was understood to have been a musician in a band.

Burchill, who found God in 1999, thanked all her friends for their good wishes and messages of support but said: “I have my Dan, who was wonderful stepfather to my poor boy for more than half of his life.”

She added: “The love of my friends is a wonderful source of fun in my life, but excuse me if I don’t need it right now.”
