'Natural look' for re-usable bags

12 April 2012

A trio of artists have been paid £30,000 each to create designs for re-usable supermarket bags.

Images of bananas, onions and a woodland scene will appear on the limited edition Sainsbury's carriers.

They were created by the artists Michael Craig-Martin, Anya Gallaccio and Paul Morrison.

Arts Council England paid for the "art in your hands" scheme which marks its 60th anniversary.

Proceeds from sales of the bags will go to charities in each store's local area.

Arts Council England's chief executive Peter Hewitt said: "Working with Sainsbury's and ourselves, the artists have produced a series of striking bags which I hope will get people thinking about art, artists and the environment, encouraging more shoppers to use fewer carrier bags."

Customers will be charged 50p for the Sainsbury's "super shopper" bags which come with the banana and woodland images.

The chain's Bags for Life - complete with onion prints - cost 10p.
