A shop mannequin with an extreme hourglass figure on display in a New Look store has caused outrage among customers.
The size 0 mannequin was displayed in New Look’s Tunbridge Wells store. Dressed in bright pink underwear, it had a very small waist in comparison to the rest of its body.
Shoppers expressed their disgust online after two shoppers posted a picture of the mannequin on social media.
One, Louise Jean, wrote on the New Look Facebook page: “I work in a school with impressionable young girls and I would hate for them to emulate this. This body type, natural to some maybe, is really damaging. Her waist is half the size of her shoulders!”
Sophie Elizabeth Evans added: “This is disgusting. Get rid of that ridiculous mannequin.”
Serina Gothard wrote: “Why not do something commendable and have more realistic model instead of this.
“Why make women feel inadequate about themselves instead of beautiful? Already have enough of that in this world. Shame.”
Marg Oaten, of SEED Eating Disorder Support Services told the Daily Mail: “When you see something this hideous, what message does it give out?”
A spokesperson for the store confirmed the mannequin had been removed and an investigation had been launched.
They added: “At New Look we want women to feel empowered by their wardrobe and would never want to encourage an unhealthy or unattainable image or lifestyle.
“The issues raised are very important to us and will be treated with the highest importance to prevent any further upset or disappointment for our customers in the future.”
