Newlywed's death in Pakistan probed

12 April 2012

A young husband has spoken of his devastation after his wife died in Pakistan.

Newlywed Sobia Wali, 22, from Glasgow, died after travelling with her parents to Lahore to attend her grandmother's funeral.

Detectives have launched an investigation into the death of the British woman, police said.

Her husband Usman Gulzar, 24, told the Daily Record newspaper: "I am devastated and I really don't want to talk about this right now. The truth will come out in time, but I've been told it`s better not to say a word right now."

Shortly before the trip, the 22-year-old had married secretly, according to the newspaper.

Strathclyde Police are now investigating claims that she sent her new husband distressed text messages from Lahore, asking for his help, prior to her death on Thursday.

The Daily Record reported that she died following a botched abortion. Mohammad Sarwar, Labour MP for Glasgow Central, said he had not been able to confirm how the young woman died.

Mr Sarwar said: "I'm making inquiries about it but nobody seems to know for definite."

A police spokesman confirmed that officers were carrying out investigations into the circumstances surrounding Ms Wali's death in Lahore. He added: "Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the cause of death."

A friend of the couple told the Daily Record newspaper that the pair had married in secret four weeks ago. According to reports, she was nearly five months pregnant when she died.
