Nick  Grimshaw on Thursday bid farewell to BBC Radio One, with the star host crying a number of times during his final show.

The host, known as Grimmy, has been at Radio One for 14 years having joined the station in 2007.

A former Breakfast Show host, Mr Grimshaw announced earlier this year he was stepping down from his Drive Time slot - with Jordan North and Vick Hope taking over.

Speaking at the start of his show at 2pm, the 36-year-old said: “We are here for my final show on Radio One – and I feel the weirdest ever.

“I just want to have a fun show. I’m going to play you some of my favourite songs I’ve just loved playing on Radio One over the years."

He added: “It was my childhood dream, I’ve had the time of my life.”

Mr Grimshaw later said: “I do feel happy you know, not like happy to get out of here, but it’s weird making the decision and thinking about it.

“And then it was weird not telling anyone and, then when I announced it on the radio and we spoke about it and I had a few weeks to process it, well it feels like the right thing to do. It feels exciting.”

His BBC sidekick Adele Roberts was also emotional throughout the show.

On Twitter, the BBC shared a series of pictures of some of the star’s best moments on the show.

On Wednesday several Radio One stars — including Clara Amfo and Annie Mac, who also stepped down earlier this month — bid farewell and pai tribute to the star.

Ms Amfo wrote: “Often, especially in popular culture the notion of someone being “born to do it” can be chucked around quite flippantly (no shade King Craig) @nicholasgrimshaw really is that guy!

“Never have I known a more natural and gifted story teller, music LOVER, with a strong commitment to FUN, who sounds like they came in to the world with a mic in hand.

“Outside of work, he is one of the most welcoming, loving and generous people I know. If he is your mate, he is YOUR mate and I’m sure you felt that through the radio during all of the golden time he has had on @bbcR1. We’ve been so lucky to have him.

“Salute to you darling it absolutely won’t be the same, enjoy every moment of your last show today, you have truly made your mark and I’m forever excited by whatever you bring us next!”

Annie Mac - full name Annie MacManus - added: “Nick Grimshaw is doing his final show for @bbcradio1. He is a man that is loved with unending devotion by his plethora of friends because of how god damn special he is as a person. Generous, kind, good from the inside out. He radiates it. That’s why it’s so fun to listen to him on the radio. Because of that remarkable warmth and wit.

“Here’s what you need to know about Nick. As someone who has had a weird reputation in the press for being a ‘friend of celebrities’, I have never met anyone who is less discerning when it comes to people and status. This is the man who always makes a point of speaking to every security guard at a shop door to make sure they don’t feel left out. People always speak to the shop assistants he says! The security guards don’t get a look in!

“Nick has time for absolutely everyone. He loves people and people love him. It was a running joke that if you invited Grim around your house, you never knew who he would show up with. It could be a producer from radio 1, his second cousin from Manchester or harry styles. Sometimes all three.”

She added: “Thanks for making me laugh every single day for the last 6 years Nick and for bringing light into all of our days. You are so special. And so f***** loved. And I am so excited to see what you will do next.”
