Nottinghamshire residents asked not to mix indoors as tougher restrictions follow spike in Covid-19 cases

PA

People in Nottinghamshire have been asked not to mix indoors with other households following a spike in Covid-19 cases.

The county's local authority asked people to follow stricter restrictions as tough measures are expected to be enforced in the area by the Government.

It asked residents to not mix with people from other households in their homes, following similar advice from Nottingham City Council on Tuesday.

The council has also asked care homes to restrict visitors.

Nottingham's infection rate has soared, with 1,654 new cases recorded in the seven days to October 4 - the equivalent of 496.8 cases per 100,000 people.

Nottinghamshire County Council said the rate of infection for the county itself is at 106 cases per 100,000, varying from 53 to 150 per 100,000.

This rate has led the authority to anticipate tough local restrictions from the Government.

Nottingham's rising rate has coincided with a recent outbreak at the University of Nottingham, as figures on its website showed 425 students had tested positive for Covid-19 during the week ending last Friday.

The numbers included 226 students in private accommodation and 106 in halls of residence.

Eight members of staff were also classed as "active confirmed cases" over the same time.

Director of public health for Nottinghamshire, Jonathan Gribbin, said: "Covid-19 does not recognise geographical boundaries so we must stand together with our local authority partners to do all we can to fight this virus across all our communities.

"The rapid and sustained increase in the numbers of positive cases is a serious cause for concern and the very dramatic rates in the city are a clear sign that action is needed now across the whole of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire."
