Olympic chiefs seek total car ban

12 April 2012

Spectators attending the 2012 Olympics will reportedly be prevented from driving anywhere near the venues.

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) is planning large exclusion zones around the events to which there will be no access except for the disabled, according to The Times.

Instead, those travelling to the Games will be given detailed instructions for public transport.

ODA director Hugh Sumner told the newspaper: "We have a very aggressive programme to make it the greenest games in modern times.

"We want to leave both a hard legacy in terms of infrastructure and a living legacy in the way people think about transport and how they travel to sports and cultural events. We will make it very plain to people that there isn't going to be parking."

Most of the events will be held in east London, for which spectators will be given free passes to use the capital's transport system across all six zones.

But some events will be held in Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow, Cardiff and Weymouth.

According to The Times, plans for park-and-ride facilities on the M25 and M11 have been abandoned as all spectators are urged to use trains or buses, cycle or walk.

Real time transport information will be provided via mobile phones on the day to advise people of delayed or cancelled services.

Despite the strategy to encourage fans to leave their cars at home, motorists in London face congestion as a special lane will be reserved for officials, media and athletes taking part in the Games.
