Danny Boyle has declared Britain’s Olympic spirit dead — just six months after the Games ended.

The Oscar-winning director who masterminded London’s spectacular opening ceremony said the Olympic feel-good factor the event inspired has already been killed as families try to cope amid unemployment, economic difficulties and cuts.

He said it would be “naive” to believe that the impact on the nation’s psyche could last, adding: “It’s nice to have a fillip like that to feel good together, then you go back to your own private battles.”

Boyle, 56, who turned down a knighthood for his efforts, said: “Obviously we are in tough economic times, which means it is difficult finding jobs for people.

“You can’t keep hoping the optimism of the Games will last,” he told The Sun.
