One in five teachers 'facing abuse'

12 April 2012

Nearly one in five primary school teachers has been subject to sexually abusive insults from children, a union has said.

And 75% of secondary teachers said pupils used such language to each other, the National Union of Teachers said.

The NUT, which questioned 190 teachers in primary and secondary schools for the survey, said some children used sexual swear words in foreign languages.

The union's general secretary, Steve Sinnott, said: "The Government must encourage schools to develop policies that have teeth which discourage parents and young people from using sexually abusive language.

"Sexist jokes, put-downs, and harassment in schools all help create an atmosphere in which female pupils and teachers feel degraded.

"Such behaviour is completely unacceptable."

A Department for Education and Skills spokesman said: "Real progress has been made in tackling serious bad behaviour in schools, and we are giving teachers an unequivocal legal right to impose discipline in schools.

"There is no place for bad language in schools, and we support schools in taking a zero tolerance approach to all forms of disruptive or insolent behaviour.

"Equally, parents have a clear responsibility to support schools in tackling any misbehaviour from their child."
