LBC presenter Iain Dale made a "big verbal mistake" on air last night while talking about the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The host of LBC's evening radio show admitted the slip after an interview with Justin Welby.

He referred to the leader of the Church of England as the Archbishop of C*nterbury, and wrote in a blog today that he "thought he had corrected myself".

He said: "Hey ho. At least it have [sic] people a laugh, I suppose. I thought I had rescued myself and corrected myself having only said the ‘cu’ bit."

TV presenter Davina McCall caught the slip and wrote online: "Lbc dj just made a big verbal mistake saying archbishop of c-nterbury!!! Ooooooops!"

The exchange occurred as part of an interview including questions on the Archbishop's views on welfare cuts.

Mr Dale added: "I said it while I was explaining why I didn't ask him about welfare benefits.

Responding to an accusation he made the remark on purpose, he wrote: " I can assure you I had no intention of saying it."
