More than 80 emergency service personnel were called out to rescue six stag party revellers who plummeted 100ft in a hotel lift accident, police have said.

The drama happened when the lift plunged to beach level at the Hotel Victoria, in Newquay, Cornwall.

Coastguard, firefighters and police officers safely evacuated the men from the lift.

A 42-year-old man, from Surrey, was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Treliske, with a leg injury, police said.

Cornwall County Council Health and Safety Executive officers were carrying out an investigation at the scene.

A statement from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said the Newquay Coastguard Rescue team and the North Cornwall sector manager went to the scene and the two Newquay RNLI lifeboats were launched.

Peter Bullard, Watch Manager, Falmouth Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre, said: "The lift is an internal hotel lift descending 100ft to just above high water level. The Coastguard was assisted with access from the water and the assistance with cliff working.

"Through a multi-agency rescue the six casualties were retrieved and transferred to the lifeboat and then passed to waiting ambulance crews who checked their condition, one casualty was transferred to hospital by ambulance."
