Two quick-thinking PCSOs stepped in to save the life a man who had a heart attack by giving him CPR in the street on Christmas Eve.

Karen Creech and Heather Watchorn treated the 57-year-old man when he was in a critical condition after collapsing in Lewisham.

The pair, who were on foot patrol, performed CPR on the man but feared the worst when he did not respond and had stopped breathing.

As they desperately waited for an ambulance to arrive on the scene they continued to fight to save him, and managed to get him breathing again before paramedics turned up with a defibrillator.

The man, who was taken to a south London hospital, has only just been transferred from intensive care after spending the Christmas period in a critical condition.

PCSO Watchorn said: "This was the first time I have dealt with a situation like that and our immediate thoughts were, we have to help this man.

"What this has shown both of us is whatever you do next can make a huge difference to someone's life."

The duo were praised by Lewisham's safer neighbourhoods team leader Chief Inspector Stuart Bell, who said: "The PCSOs acted quickly without hesitation in what was a spontaneous situation, their actions undoubtedly gave this man the best opportunity for survival."
