Piers Morgan brands Boris Johnson ‘utterly insane’ for making kids return to schools for one day

Piers Morgan has blasted Boris Johnson’s “utterly insane” decision to u-turn on school closures after just one day.

Thousands of pupils returned to primary schools after the Christmas break on Monday after the the Prime MInister insisted that classrooms were safe.

Hours later, Mr Johnson announced a new national lockdown in Englan, ordering peopke to “stay at home” and forcing all schools to close until at least after the February half-term.

The brief reopening of many schools on Monday came despite pleas from  teaching unions pleas and local councils demands that it was not safe for pupils to return.

On Tuesday Good Morning Britain co-host Piers Morgan launched a sarcastic tirade against the Prime Minister over the u-turn.

He said: "All the kids, who we know are the biggest spreaders of the virus, going back for a day…. What a brilliant idea by the Prime Minister!

"He sends them all back to school so they can mingle with other students for them to then go home and infect their elderly relatives?"

"My thoughts are with Gavin Williamson," he continued. "This guy is the most clueless Education Secretary we've ever seen."

"I watched Boris Johnson, still mindful of his six times pledge of Andrew Marr - 'schools are safe!'" said Piers as a variety of clips of the prime minister claiming schools were safe were shown.

He continued: "Sorry prime minister, but how did they go from being completely safe on Sunday to to closing on Monday?

"Why do you do this? Why do you disrupt everybody's lives for one day? It's utterly insane."

Mr Morgan pre-empted his latest rant with an angry tweet after yesterday’s lockdown announcement.

He wrote: "So, just hours after Boris Johnson assured us schools are 'safe' and will stay open, he shuts them all. But only after allowing them to be open for one day so everyone could infect each other & take the virus home to their older relatives.

"This is scandalously bad government."

All schools and colleges in England will be closed until after the February half-term, except for children of key workers and the vulnerable. However, early years settings such as nurseries, alternative provision and special schools will remain open.
