Piers Morgan appeared to make a pointed remark about his former employer as he shared an extract from his book on Twitter.

He said he did not believe claims made by Meghan in the interview, which included comments about her mental health and racism within the royal family.

He has since said he has become the “latest ‘victim’ of the cancel culture that is permeating our country, every minute, of every hour, of every day”.

“Though of course, I consider myself to be neither a victim, nor actually cancelled,” he added.

On Monday, he shared a highlighted extract from his book Wake Up, which reads: “Cancel culture is not about whether obvious racists should be given platforms.

“It’s about potentially seeing your life and career turned upside down for expressing opinions that the woke brigade don’t like, about anything.

“I’m lucky in that although there have been repeated attempts to ‘cancel’ me, including petitions to have me sacked, I’ve survived because I have strong-minded employers who refuse to bow to the mob, and I have a powerful TV, newspaper column and social media platform to fight fire with fire.”

He captioned the photo: “This entry from my book aged like a bottle of corked Liebfraumilch.”

Morgan’s comments sparked thousands of complaints to Ofcom, including from Meghan.

She raised concerns with the broadcaster about the effect Morgan’s comments may have on the issue of mental health generally and those attempting to deal with their own problems – and not about the former newspaper editor’s personal attack on herself.

His exit from the show has had reverberations on both sides of the Atlantic with Sharon Osbourne forced to apologise after she defended Morgan on US chat show The Talk.

Osbourne, 68, had supported her friend, saying: “I feel like I’m about to be put in the electric chair because I have a friend who many people think is a racist so that makes me a racist.”

On Friday morning, she issued a long apology, saying after “some reflection”, she was “truly sorry”.

Morgan expressed outrage she had been obliged to apologise for backing him, writing on Twitter: “Sharon’s been shamed & bullied into apologising for defending me against colleagues accusing me of racism because I don’t believe Meghan Markle’s bullsh*t.

“This is where we’ve reached. I demand an apology from those @TheTalkCBS bullies for their disgraceful slurs against ME.”

A statement from Buckingham Palace has previously said the royal family is taking the allegations of racism “very seriously” despite “some recollections” among royals varying.
