Prayers were said and candles lit in the communities touched by the deaths of two toddlers found dead in holdalls in the boot of their mother's car.

Three-year-old Harry Donnison and his two-year-old sister Elise were remembered at services days after their bodies were found in Heathfield, East Sussex.

Their mother, Fiona Donnison, 43, was remanded in custody by Lewes magistrateson Saturday and transferred to a medium-secure psychiatric unit after being charged with their murders between January 25 and 28.

The bodies were found by police in the boot of Donnison's silver Nissan, close to the former family home in Heathfield, after she attended the local police station in a distressed state on Wednesday.

The toddlers were remembered at church services in Heathfield and almost 70 miles away in Lightwater, Surrey, the village where they moved with their mother last September after she split from her husband Paul Donnison.

At St Richard's Church in Heathfield, the Rev Malcolm Jones said: "It's a terrible tragedy and a very unusual event in what is a very quiet country town, and we are all feeling very sad.

"We wish it hadn't happened but we are trying to hold the remaining members of the family in our prayers, because we can only imagine how difficult it must be for them."

Prayers were also said and candles lit at All Saints' Church in Lightwater in services led by the Rev Martin Sheldon, who said the congregation had periods of quiet reflection.

The Rev Sheldon said: "The people here have really felt the pain of the tragic events and our hearts go out to the family and everyone involved.

"At the service people would say that words cannot express the depth of our grief and sadness at this time and remember that only some six weeks ago we celebrated Christmas."
