Prince Harry and Sir Elton John launch fight against male transmission of HIV

Prince Harry and Sir Elton John today launched a billion-dollar global network targeting male transmission of HIV.

The Duke of Sussex reunited with the pop star, who performed for select guests at his wedding reception, on stage at the International Aids conference in Amsterdam to announce the MenStar Coalition - a joint task force including the Elton John AIDS Foundation, the US Government’s PEPFAR programme, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Its first campaign will offer self-testing to young men in Kenya.

Prince Harry said: “What we have learned is that we succeed when we put people at the heart of our strategies.

“This is a time when new, energetic and innovative solutions are needed more than ever before... and this campaign is bravely tackling the root cause of this problem - the lack of awarenesss of HIV prevention among hard to reach young men.”

Sir Elton said: “If we want to win this fight once and for all we must bring men into this fight.”

Harry introduced the singer as “my friend” before both hugged and high-fived with young people and charity representatives.

The royal has followed in the footsteps of Princess Diana, who was a pioneer in the fight against Aids, through his work as co-founder of Africa-based charity Sentebale which supports young people affected by HIV.
