Prince to launch green ideas

12 April 2012

The Prince of Wales is due to tackle big businesses over the environment as he attempts to lead the way with a royal 'green' revolution.

Prime Minister Tony Blair, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the chief executive of petroleum giant BP Lord Browne will gather at St James's Palace to hear Charles's ideas.

The heir to the throne is said to be determined to reduce his carbon footprint on the world. He has urged his staff to help fight global warming by providing bicycles for them to make short trips around the capital instead of taking cars or cabs.

Charles wants industry leaders to better assess, and eventually reverse, the damage they and their products are doing to the environment.

The prince will launch Costing The Earth - The Accounting For Sustainability project in front of politicians, business leaders and faith representatives.

He will be supported by Dr Rowan Williams and a video message by former US presidential candidate Al Gore, whose film An Inconvenient Truth warns that the world must act now to save itself.

Actor Stephen Fry and comedian Al Murray have teamed up to make a film in support of the Prince. Fry, a close friend of Charles's, plays Planet Earth while Murray, otherwise known as character the Pub Landlord, stars as the Moon.

Charles is to set an example by labelling all of his Duchy Originals product range with details of greenhouse gases made in their production.

Under the scheme, every stage of production will be looked at to examine how much carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and other gases are emitted.

A Clarence House spokeswoman said: "The prince hopes that Duchy Originals will be able to lead the way and thinks that people should know the cost of their food in terms of greenhouse gases as well as pounds and pence."
