Murder squad detectives have launched an inquiry after a teenager was found dead at a house.

The 17-year-old boy was found with fatal injuries at a property in Park Mews, Calvert Road, Greenwich, south east London.

Police were called by a neighbour who dialled 999 after hearing a gunshot shortly after 2am on Friday.

Officers and paramedics raced to the house but the young man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Five people, all believed to be teenage boys and acquaintances of the victim, were arrested nearby.

It is understood that one line of inquiry is that the boy may have died in a tragic accident while handling a gun.

But a Metropolitan Police spokesman said investigators have yet to confirm exactly how he died.

He said: "Police were called at 2.05am to reports of a seriously injured male inside a house in Park Mews, Calvert Road, SE10. When we got there London Ambulance Service were there working on a 17-year-old white male. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"We await formal identification. Officers are attempting to contact his next of kin and a post-mortem examination will take place in due course."

Park Mews is a small cul-de-sac of small modern houses and flats a short distance from Westcombe Park railway station.
