Tens of thousands of women have gathered in cities across the UK to mark 100 years since British women won the vote.

Women in London, Belfast, Cardiff and Einburgh donned the purple, green and white colours of the suffragette movement to join the mass procession.

One hundred female artists worked with communities across the UK to create banners for the marches in the four cities.

Amazing images showed the colourful parades through the capital and other cities with many hailing the “amazing atmosphere”.

Participants were handed a scarf in white, green or violet to wear and choreographed into sections.

The 1918 Representation of the People Act gave women the vote - but only for those who were over 30 years old and who also owned property.

Helen Marriage, director of organising group Artichoke, said ahead of the event: “Individuals and groups up and down the country will be at the heart of Processions.

"The response from organisations, artists and communities wanting to work with us has been overwhelming.

“I salute the thousands of women who have embraced the idea of Processions and, following in the footsteps of their Suffragette and Suffragist ancestors, will create an unforgettable image that will commemorate 100 years of women voting in a joyful inclusive occupation of our city streets.”
