Rachel pips Mikey to take BB crown

12 April 2012

Rachel Rice has won the ninth series of Big Brother, walking away with the £100,000 prize.

The 24-year-old trainee teacher from Torfaen in Wales beat Mikey Hughes to win the title.

The result had been too close to call, with the bookies favourite regularly changing.

When her name was announced she said: "Oh my god, no way" and then hugged Mikey and told him: "I love you so much."

Rachel then guided Mikey to the Big Brother door and told him to be careful of the steps. She won the reality show with 51.3% of the public vote.

After leaving the house Rachel revealed she planned to split £10,000 between five charities. She said she had not decided which ones but that they would include the Stroke Association and a cancer charity.

Of the remaining prize money, she said: "I've not even thought about it. But I do know there are a few debts that need to be paid from being a student.

"I would also like a car that actually goes round a roundabout without breaking down and doesn't have moss in it."

Rachel, who was criticised in the house for being boring and sitting on the fence, defended herself by saying: "That was their opinion and maybe to them I am boring, but the fact we were in the final five was just a big boost and thank you all for that."

Runner-up Mikey said he was "over the moon" that Rachel won because she was genuine and had been herself.
