Andy Murray returned home to a hero’s welcome today and revealed he was looking forward to celebrating his historic US Open win at home with his dogs — after catching up on some sleep.

The bleary-eyed tennis star arrived at Heathrow with girlfriend Kim Sears, 24, to cheers from waiting supporters.

Murray, 25, said his exertions had left him “exhausted” and he now wanted to sleep in his own bed and see his beloved dogs Rusty and Maggie May.

He said: “I’m looking forward to seeing them. I’m pretty exhausted. I’ve had three hours’ sleep in two days. I’m looking forward to sleeping.”

Murray had to fight his way through a scrum of photographers after landing at 8.58am and said he felt “a bit different” having won the title.

He said: “When I go home, and just get to be in my own bed, my normal surroundings, and be around my dogs ... that will be the time where I have the chance to just reflect on everything that’s happened this summer.”
