Reward offered over Jessie murder

12 April 2012

Police are offering a £20,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the killers who gunned down a 15-year-old boy.

Six months after Jessie James was shot three times as he cycled through a park in Manchester, detectives admit many in his community are still too scared to talk.

Jessie was murdered in the early hours of September 9 last year in Broadfield Park, Moss Side, an area notorious for its gang culture.

Greater Manchester Police have already put together a BBC Crimewatch reconstruction of his last moments and posted clips on internet video sharing site YouTube in a bid to persuade people to come forward.

It is hoped the new cash incentive will break the wall of silence.

Posters and billboards will be put up in Moss Side advertising the reward.

Detective Superintendent Shaun Donnellan, senior investigating officer for the case, said: "I know there are local people who know who killed Jessie James.

"So far some of these people have been reluctant to come forward and I know why - it's because they fear for themselves or their families.

"Well, I can make a promise to anybody with information: I can protect you and your family, I can arrange for you to give evidence behind a screen, to have your voice distorted so that nobody in your community will ever know you gave evidence.

"Your courage could convict a killer."
