Ricky saved in Strictly dance-off

12 April 2012

Strictly Come Dancing favourite Ricky Whittle narrowly escaped leaving the competition the day after being released on bail by police investigating an alleged assault.

No mention of the incident was made by the judges but they did give him a tongue-lashing for his rock and roll performance.

Despite some guidance during rehearsals from The Fonz star Henry Winkler, Whittle slipped up both at the beginning and the end of the dance.

He failed to get the public's support either and was forced to fight for his place in the quarter finals in the dance-off.

It was the popular Natalie Cassidy and partner Vincent Simone who left the show after the judges decided not to save them from elimination.

But the audience proved she was still the public's favourite with a standing ovation as she and her partner got the news from the panel.

Whittle was questioned on suspicion of assault following the incident in Liverpool city centre.

The Hollyoaks actor was later released on police bail and a BBC spokeswoman last night confirmed that Whittle would compete and "the show will continue as normal".

The actor walked into a police station in Merseyside at 5.30am yesterday, four hours after the alleged incident which followed a Hollyoaks party at Liverpool bar Parr Street Studios.

Whittle seemed nervous as he faced the judges and their verdict will not have settled his jitters. Alesha Dixon branded the dance "a bit lacklustre" and Craig Revel Horwood said it was "really off balance at the end, OK but it lacked kerpow".
