Royal baby names: Bookies' top picks after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry reveal they are expecting a baby in the spring

Bookmakers have revealed Alexander, Alice and Arthur are their frontrunners for names that could be chosen by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for their child.

The bookies' favourite's have been revealed following the exciting announcement this morning that Meghan is pregnant.

Alexander is the favourite for a boy at 2/1, according to private bookmakers Fitzdares. Alice is the favourite for a girl at 5/2.

The Duke and Dutchess of Sussex arrived in Sydney for the start of their royal tour today, and reportedly told the Queen, Prince Charles and other senior royals at Princess Eugenie’s wedding on Friday before they left for Australia.

Katie Baylis of Betfair said: “Meghan’s loose coat at Princess Eugenie’s wedding on Friday led to speculation that an announcement was imminent and now that we have it, the Royal Baby name game starts.

“At this stage Diana, Arthur and Alice, which was favourite at different stages for Kate and William’s babies, are the 12/1 front runners.

"However, with months until the baby is born, those odds will shorten, change and other names will come to the forefront, so watch this space.”

Private bookmaker Fitzdares gave Alexander top odds along with Arthur and Philip if the tike is a boy - or Alice, Victoria and Mary if it's a girl.

Meanwhile Ladbrokes had slightly different odds at the top - putting Diana in as favourite as well, at 12/1.

They also had odds on Theresa, Boris and Joffrey - the name of the child king in Game of Thrones - in their list of possible names.

Kensington Palace announced on Monday that Meghan is expected to give birth in spring next year.

"Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019," the royals said in a statement.

Grant Harrold, the former Butler to the couple, tweeted: "Congratulations to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex who are expecting their first child in the spring."

Australian Prime Minister Scott Harrison said: "What fantastic news! Australia is thrilled for you both. Looking forward to sharing in the joy during your stay down under."

Meghan once described motherhood as being on her "bucket list", while Harry has often confessed he would love to have children.

They also discussed it during their engagement interview, with the Duke saying: "You know, I think one step at a time, and hopefully we'll start a family in the near future.
