Royal Mail gears up for Christmas

Royal Mail is taking on extra staf to handle the Christmas post
12 April 2012

Royal Mail is laying on thousands more trucks, vans, trains and flights to help deliver the two billion-item festive postbag.

Around 38,000 trucks and vans will be used to collect and distribute mail - 5,000 more than usual - and there will be nine extra flights every day, taking the total to 64.

The company has already announced it is investing £15 million in this year's Christmas operation, including the recruitment of 18,000 temporary workers.

Mark Higson of Royal Mail said: "We are using extra planes, trains and trucks to help transport the Christmas mailbag of around two billion items to all corners of the UK.

"These additional services will help us transport and deliver the Christmas mailbag to every community across the UK, including homes in the remotest locations."
