The Royal Mint has unveiled a new £5 coin to commemorate the arrival of the royal baby princess.

To celebrate the birth of the princess 500 gold coins and 9,500 silver coins are to be produced.

The coins have been given a royal seal of approval from the Queen, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Chancellor.

The Royal Mint’s Shane Bissett said: “It is only fitting that we commemorate this new addition to the Royal Family with the release of a special coin, just as we celebrated the arrival of Prince George.”

The coins have been designed by John Bergdahl, the same artist behind the commemorative coins which were minted for the birth of Prince George.

Babies born on the same day as the royal baby will also be given a special silver penny from the Royal Mint.

Parents of babies who arrived on May 2 can register the birth of their child on the Royal Mint’s Facebook page to receive one of the 2015 pennies.

The first silver penny was presented to new parents Chantal and Miguel Abel whose daughter Sofia arrived at the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital in London at 11.30am on Saturday - around three hours after the royal birth.

Mr and Mrs Abel said in a statement: "We're over the moon and want to thank The Royal Mint for their kind gesture. It's a special day for us and we're excited to be one of the first families to receive a lucky silver penny and be part of the celebrations."

The Royal Mail has also issued a postmark which will appear on letters across the UK on Tuesday for the first time in its 500 year history.

It will read: “Congratulations TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their daughter.”
