Tributes are being paid to a teenage rugby player found dead in a lake in France while on a tour of the country.

The young British sportsman, named as 16-year-old Harry Sykes, was away with the Halifax Elite Rugby Academy.

Reports state his body was discovered late on Wednesday after he went missing near Cavayere Lake.

Mr Sykes has been described as a “truly kind, honest and committed young man”.

His mother Natasha Burton, writing on Facebook, said: “As most of you may have seen, my handsome and beautiful baby boy has been taken far too soon.”

Many shared their condolences below this post, many simply writing they were “sorry” for her loss.

One said there were “no words” to express their sympathies.

In a statement, posted on social media, a representative of the Halifax Elite Rugby Academy said: “We are devastated beyond words to confirm that one of our players, Harry Sykes, passed away yesterday, Wednesday 5th September.

“We ask that you respect the privacy of Harry's family, friends and teammates at this most difficult time.

“A full tribute will be released in due course but at the moment we are all coming to terms with the loss of a truly kind, honest and committed young man.”

Comments reflected sadly upon the “devastating news” and stated that Mr Sykes had been taken “early”.

Speaking on behalf of the Rugby Football League, its chief executive, Ralph Rimmer, said: “We are extremely saddened by the tragic news that Halifax Elite Rugby Academy’s Harry Sykes has passed away.”

A post on Facebook by Halifax Rugby League FC also sent respects to those mourning.

It said: “Halifax RLFC would like to express our condolences to the family and teammates of local young player Harry Sykes who has tragically passed away in France whilst on tour with his team from the Halifax Elite Rugby Academy. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and teammates at this time.”

It is believed that Mr Sykes arrived in France on Monday and had played a rugby match on Tuesday.

A Carcassonne Council official, quoted by the Sun, said: "An alert was put out to emergency services and there was an extensive search of the water involving divers.

"It was just before 11pm on Wednesday that night divers found the body of the missing person after two hours in the water."
