Liz Truss‘s resignation kickstarts a contest to find the next Tory leader and prime minister, and the public are leading calls for it to be none other than Sam Allardyce.

Truss’s departure after 45 days in office makes her the shortest-serving PM in UK history. The reason for her exit, she said, is because she could not deliver the mandate on which she was elected as Tory leader.

Allardyce, colloquially referred to as Big Sam, was the England manager, though he left the role by mutual consent after just 67 days following allegations of malpractice. Since then, the former Bolton, Newcastle and Blackburn manager has enjoyed stints at Crystal Palace, Everton and West Brom, and has even taken command of a few more England games.

Big Sam was often called upon by Premier League clubs during a crisis. Having been unemployed for more than a year, perhaps a career in politics isn't such a horrible idea after all.

It’s not the first time Big Sam has been urged to take up the PM post. Earlier this year Twitter users were rooting for Allardyce to replace Boris Johnson and back in 2016 a petition was made – and unsurprisingly rejected.

With only a matter of hours since Truss resigned, Twitter users have once again been working their magic and trending Allardyce.

Big Sam isn’t the only football coach Twitter users want as the next PM - Ryan Giggs also seems to be in everyone’s mind.

Back in 2014, the phrase “Give It Giggsy” was born when Manchester United “superfan” Andy Tate made a post-match rant about David Moyes and Marouane Fellaini on Full Time Devils. Desperate to get the former Everton boss out of the club, Tate demanded the board “Give it Giggsy til the end of the season”. Tate was quickly thrust into the world of internet superstardom with the video.

Thanks to Tate, Give it Giggsy has been frequently used in the context of hiring Giggs as the next PM.
