A head and shoulders bronze bust of Sir Winston Churchill is expected to fetch as much as £80,000 at auction.

The bust is one of just six casts taken from the statue of the former Prime Minister that stands in Parliament Square.

Auctioned by Essex-based firm Sworders, buyers have been given a guide price of between £60,000 and £80,000 for the cast, which stands at 34in (86.5cm) high and 51in wide (130cm).

The original 12ft high bronze was created in 1971 by Ivor Roberts-Jones, once head of the sculpture department at Goldsmiths College of Art.

He said the statue’s pose was inspired by a mournful Sir Winston inspecting the bomb wreckage of the House of Commons in May, 1941.

In 1995, the artist was commissioned to create another cast of the Churchill figure to stand in the Winston Churchill Square in Prague.

He said his original mould for his Parliament Square figure had disintegrated and doubted whether Parliament would allow him to make a cast from the statue himself.

He produced a clay maquette for a new head but died a couple of months afterwards.

After negotiation, his widow Monica Roberts-Jones gave her permission for a copy to be made of the statue in Parliament Square.

The auction takes place at Sworders Fine Art Auctioneers on April 12.
