A British soldier has been killed by an explosion while on foot patrol in Afghanistan.

The soldier, from 3rd Battalion The Rifles, died from wounds received in the blast south of Sangin district centre, in Helmand Province.

Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said: "He was on a foot patrol as part of the operations that have been bringing security to the local population in that area. We have lost one of our comrades and we will remember him."

Next of kin have been informed, the Ministry of Defence said.

The explosion went off in a "green zone", the MoD said.

Lt Col Wakefield added: "This morning in Sangin an explosion caused the death of a British soldier from A Company 3 Rifles. It happened in the 'green zone' area to the south of Sangin district centre, an area where until recently insurgents had held sway."

His death came after tributes were paid to Rifleman Peter Aldridge, 19, of A Company 4 Rifles, who also died in an explosion near Sangin.

Rfn Aldridge's last words were to tell his mother he loved her, a poignant tribute revealed.

His family said he died a hero, adding: "He was determined to get his first tour of duty under his belt. He believed in the Army and was proud of his job and we are so proud of you Peter. Our son died a hero, he lost his life doing what he believed in."

The teenager, from Folkestone, Kent, was serving as part of 3 Rifles Battle Group and was killed while on foot patrol as part of an operation to provide security for the local population in Sangin, the MoD said.
