12 April 2012

Search teams have found the body of a teenage soldier who was swept down a fast-flowing stream on an training exercise.

North Yorkshire Police said rescuers helping with the search operation near Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire found the body of a young soldier downstream from where the 17-year-old had fallen in on Saturday morning.

He was one of three soldiers who fell into Risedale Beck on Hipswell Moor during a routine exercise.

Two of the soldiers were rescued but police, a mountain rescue team, an RAF helicopter and members of the International Rescue Corps took more than a day to locate his body.

A joint police, military and Health and Safety Executive investigation is under way.

The grim discovery as communities around many parts of Britain continued to be forced from their homes by the weather.

Police said 200 people were evacuated from their homes in Nottinghamshire after live overhead power cables fell on a flooded road in Sturton Road in North Leverton, near Retford.

More than 30 residents were evacuated from their homes in South Yorkshire when more than a month's worth of rain fell in just 24 hours.

And a 69-year-old man suffered a suspected heart attack as firefighters in boats plucked him from his flooded home. He was among 30 people rescued from their homes in the Darfield area of Barnsley, after the River Dearne burst its banks.

Nearly 30 flood warnings are in place - one of them classified as severe - and meteorologists are warning that more rain is to come.

Joe Giacomelli, a spokesman for the Environment Agency, said: "Generally the situation has stabilised and river levels are gradually dropping but we are warning people to remain vigilant."
