Soldier's father backs troops call

12 April 2012

A call for more soldiers to be sent to Afghanistan has been made by the father of one of the British troops killed there.

Daniel Jackson, whose son Damien, 19, was killed in Helmand in July, made the call on Thursday night - echoing a similar plea made by Nato commander General James Jones earlier in the day.

Mr Jackson said "manpower levels aren't anywhere near that which is required to do the job".

He said his son, who died when his foot patrol was ambushed at a helicopter landing site, was once asked to go on a three-hour patrol which ended up lasting nine days.

Mr Jackson, of South Shields, Tyne and Wear, said although his son was aware of the dangers, the reality was far worse.

He told ITV News: "I would like to see our forces concentrated more. I would like to see them not so spread out.

"I mean we are fighting two wars on two fronts. We have two Vietnams going on at the moment."

"I hesitate to say pull the troops out. The reason for that is I still feel for the guys out there. I think any withdrawal would be hazardous for the guys that are there, still."

Asked if Britain could win a war in Afghanistan, he replied: "No. There has never been a successful action by any foreign invader in Afghanistan. It has never been done."

Private Jackson died just four days before his 20th birthday on July 5. He was taking part in a 3 Para Battle Group security patrol in Sangin when his unit came under attack.
