Soldiers killed in US road crash

12 April 2012

Two British soldiers have been killed in a road crash in America following a training exercise.

Cpl Jonathan Train, 26, and Sgt Andrew Jowers, 36, were returning home after the exercise with the Royal Air Force when the accident happened in western America on December 5.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: "It is with deep regret that the Ministry of Defence can confirm the deaths of Corporal Jonathan Leslie Train of the Royal Lancers, and Sgt Andrew Jowers from 4 Regiment Royal Artillery - in a road traffic accident in Western America on the evening of December 5.

"The soldiers were participating in a Royal Air Force training exercise and were returning to their accommodation at the end of the day when the accident occurred.

"The incident is currently being investigated by the US civil authorities. The immediate next of kin have been informed. Our thoughts are with their families and friends during this difficult time."

The Daily Star said that Sgt Jowers was due to return home to his wife Carol-Ann and three sons for Christmas on December 22.

His widow, of Hemlington, Middlesbrough, told the paper: "He had been there only two weeks and was due to come back next Friday. We just can't believe it."

His mother, Maureen, 54, from Middlesbrough, added: "I always worried about that knock on the door but I just want him back."

The Sun newspaper in Colorado said the accident happened when the soldiers' pick-up truck was involved in a collision with another vehicle.
