Hopes that David Cameron will gain a substantial "Blackpool bounce" from his keynote speech to the Tory conference have met with a cool response from an influential pollster.
Ben Page, director of Ipsos Mori, said the Conservative leader had made the "right noises" for the party faithful, but nothing that would make "Gordon Brown tremble in his boots".
"I don't think he has turned things round," he warned.
Mr Page told BBC News 24: "It's the culmination of a competent week. They have shown they can be united. Things have gone reasonably well for them. But I just don't think that he has done something that will break the mould of where we are now in British politics."
Mr Page continued: "The speech was fresh, the delivery was fresh, it's a different style, it's not the standard politician's speech.
"What I don't think it does is provide this overarching narrative about where we are going as a country and the key issues and exactly why the Conservatives are there.
"He's touched lots of bases, he's made the right noises for the Conservative faithful, but whether - and we will only see this in the days to come - it is one of those defining moments that everybody can remember, I'm afraid I think not."
And he added: "They should certainly get some recovery but I am not convinced that the mood has changed and Gordon Brown will now be trembling in his boots."
