Speed camera scam made thousands

12 April 2012

The ringleader of a speed camera scam pocketed thousands of pounds in return for taking the blame for offences committed by other motorists.

Abdul Musa, 48, of Cedar Street, Blackburn, Lancashire, admitted taking the blame for other people's offences on up to 120 occasions.

His scam was uncovered last year when more than 50 police officers carried out raids in the Blackburn area.

A Lancashire Police spokeswoman said he was caught because speed camera images clearly showed he was not behind the wheel on the occasions he claimed to have been.

Musa charged up to £200 a time for taking the rap, despite serving a driving ban. He carried out the offences between 2002 and 2008.

He pleaded guilty to 12 counts of perverting the course of justice, but admitted his involvement in up to 120 offences.

Musa was sentenced to 16 months in prison at Preston Crown Court last Friday.

Eleven others who admitted their part in the scam were collectively sentenced to 255 weeks in prison suspended for 12 months and 680 hours' unpaid work.

Pc Mark Pilkington of Lancashire Police, who led the investigation, said the scam was a "national problem".

He said: "Musa admitted that he took the blame for other people's speed camera offences on up to 120 occasions. The sentences should send a powerful message to motorists that avoiding liability for speed camera offences is a serious criminal offence and we will target anyone we think is involved in this type of crime."
