Stabbed boy's mother relives "honeytrap" murder in film

Tragedy: John Boyega as Shakilus Townsend in My Murder
20 March 2012

The "honeytrap killing" of teenager Shakilus Townsend is the subject of a powerful new documentary drama on the BBC.

John Boyega — star of British movie Attack The Block — plays Shakilus in My Murder, which also features real-life testimony from the 16-year-old victim's mother.

Nicola Dyer tells of the trust her son had for the girl who lured him to his death in a cul-de-sac in Thornton Heath in July 2008.

Samantha Joseph, then 15, texted the killers as she rode on a bus with Shakilus. He was beaten with baseball bats and stabbed six times by a gang led by her boyfriend Danny McLean, 18.

Shakilus had become besotted with Joseph and her boyfriend vowed revenge when he found out about their relationship.

McLean and five others were jailed for life at the Old Bailey for murder. Joseph was sentenced to a minimum of 10 years for murder.

Boyega also narrates the film, revealing how Shakilus suffered the worst stab wound ever seen by the paramedics who treated him. It took him 10 hours to die. After the attack he cried out for his mother saying: "I don’t want to die."

In the film Ms Dyer tells how she had to identify his body. She says: "I remember everything just happening around me and I wanted to scream stop, I wanted everything to just stop."

My Murder, written by Levi David Addai, is on BBC3 at 9pm next Monday.
